題目：

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation.

Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

練習：

A considerable number of people choose to be their own boss instead of being employed by a firm. There are various reasons why they want to work for themselves; however, there are still some drawbacks of doing this.

There are two main reasons why people decide to be self-employed. Firstly, those people can work at the time entirely based on their own schedule and more easily arrange their own holidays. They know how to arrange their timetable better so that they can work more productively and efficiently; moreover, they can have holidays whenever they want so they may be more creative. Furthermore, there might be an opportunity they can grow their business to great success and gain more money. For example, a friend of mine is self-employed and he founded his own music school and he has made a fortune, much more than the money he got when he worked as a music teacher at school.

Responsibilities and risks are the two main disadvantages that they need to consider. They are responsible for everything related to business, such as taxation, accounting, marketing, and sales, things that they might not be familiar with or have learnt at uni. They may end up being overwhelmed and extremely stressed that they might work more than twelve hours a day. Moreover, according to the statistic, over ninety per cent of the new companies or start-ups close within five years after they are founded. Those self-employed people need to face huge challenges and they should know that they might fail so that they cannot have enough money even to make a living.

In conclusion, self-employment can be rather attractive for some people, but several risks and challenges need taking and facing. (286 words)
